2007 - The Day the Dolphins Died
Exposure of the toxicity of dolphin meat can shut this
ghastly business down.
By Hardy Jones
I’m standing on a small ridge overlooking Hatajiri
Bay. What we had feared is occurring. The
fishermen have arrived. They are pulling the nets in
a way that is forcing the 7 or 8 risso’s dolphins captured
yesterday into a small bay where they will kill them. They
put them in this bay so we can’t directly photograph
them. This is a terribly sad thing to see, not that we didn’t
expect it, but to be standing here slowly watching this event
unfold is heart wrenching. There are fishermen all
around us; they are videotaping us; they are blocking all
our routes that would enable us to get closer to this slaughter.
The world needs to know that despite the massive amount
of attention that was devoted to Taiji in the last
week or ten days, there was an 8 day lull in the killing,
but the killing has resumed as of Thursday early morning
Japan time.
The fishermen have now begun to bring the bodies of the
dead dolphins out of the cove and they are dragging them
to a larger boat off shore where the dolphins will be cut
up, butchered and then they will be brought back for sale
in the town of Taiji.
Obviously strong measures are required now that it is evident
that the killing will continue. BlueVoice has a strong
program of demonstrating the toxicity of the dolphin meat
and I think that ultimately if exposing this ghastly cruelty
is not enough then we will expose and must make known the
terrible levels of mercury and organic pollutants that are
in this dolphin meat. It is very unhealthy to eat the
meat and this entire business should be shut down as soon
as possible.
